Canadian Citizenship
Becoming a Canadian citizen is an important milestone for permanent residents who have made Canada their home. Canadian citizenship provides important rights and benefits, including the ability to vote and apply for a Canadian passport.
At HM Group, we assist eligible permanent residents with understanding the Canadian citizenship requirements and preparing their applications.
Who Can Apply for Canadian Citizenship?
To apply for Canadian citizenship, you generally must:
• Have valid Canadian permanent resident status
• Meet the physical presence requirement in Canada
• Have met applicable Canadian income tax filing obligations
• Meet the language requirement, if applicable
• Pass the Canadian citizenship test, if required
• Meet other requirements under Canada's Citizenship Act
All applicant's circumstances are different. Travel outside Canada, immigration history and other personal factors can affect eligibility.
Physical Presence Requirement
One of the most important requirements for Canadian citizenship is physical presence in Canada.
Generally, applicants must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days during the five years before applying.
Your travel history should be carefully reviewed before submitting your application to ensure that your physical presence calculation is accurate.
Language and Citizenship Test
Applicants between the ages of 18 and 54 generally need to demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French and complete the Canadian citizenship test.
The citizenship test covers subjects such as Canadian history, government, geography, laws, rights and responsibilities.
Applicants aged 55 and over are generally exempt from the language and citizenship test requirements.
The Canadian Citizenship Application Process
The citizenship process generally involves:
1Eligibility assessment – Determining whether you meet the citizenship requirements.
2Application preparation – Gathering the required information and supporting documents.
3Application submission – Submitting your citizenship application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
4IRCC processing – IRCC reviews the application and may request additional information or documents.
5Citizenship test – Completing the test, where required.
6Citizenship ceremony – Approved applicants are invited to take the Oath of Citizenship and officially become Canadian citizens.
The processing time can vary depending on the application and IRCC processing volumes.
